Synopsis

The film centers on Lester Burnham (played by Kevin Spacey), a disillusioned 42-year-old advertising executive living in a suburban neighborhood with his wife, Carolyn (played by Annette Bening), and teenage daughter, Jane (played by Thora Birch). Lester feels trapped in a monotonous and unfulfilling life, leading to a deep midlife crisis.

Lester’s awakening begins when he becomes infatuated with Angela Hayes (played by Mena Suvari), Jane’s beautiful and confident friend. This obsession propels Lester to transform his life, quitting his job, blackmailing his boss, and starting to work out to impress Angela. Meanwhile, Carolyn, who is having an affair with Buddy Kane (played by Peter Gallagher), becomes increasingly disconnected from Lester.

Ricky lives with his strict and abusive father, Colonel Frank Fitts (played by Chris Cooper), who suspects Ricky of being involved in illicit activities.
