Synopsis
In Gladiator, the esteemed Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius, played by Russell Crowe, leads the Roman army to a decisive victory against Germanic tribes. Emperor Marcus Aurelius, nearing the end of his reign, wishes to restore the Roman Republic and names Maximus as his successor, bypassing his son, Commodus.
Furious and power-hungry, Commodus murders his father and orders Maximus’s execution. Maximus escapes but is gravely wounded and unable to save his family from Commodus’s wrath. Captured and sold into slavery, Maximus is trained as a gladiator by Proximo, a former gladiator himself.
As Maximus fights in the arenas, his prowess and determination earn him the respect of other gladiators and the adoration of the Roman populace. He is eventually brought to the Colosseum in Rome, where he encounters Commodus. Maximus seeks to avenge the murder of his family and the betrayal of his Emperor.
